In his remarks at the Munich Leaders Conference, Vice President JD Vance emphasized a strong U.S.-Europe partnership, asserting that the two are "on the same team" due to shared civilizational and cultural ties. He rejected the notion of driving a wedge between them, despite occasional disagreements, and stressed the need for the alliance to evolve to meet 21st-century challenges. Vance advocated for increased European defense burden-sharing, noting that Europe must spend more and rebuild industrial capacity to ensure self-sufficiency, particularly in light of declining military readiness. He supported a NATO goal of 5% defense spending, emphasizing that spending must be strategic to bolster industrial strength for potential conflicts. Vance also addressed trade, calling for fairer treatment of American exporters by reducing European tariff and non-tariff barriers, such as regulatory biases against U.S. defense and technology firms. He expressed optimism about ongoing trade discussions with Europe, aiming for reciprocity and a synergistic relationship. Additionally, Vance cautioned both the U.S. and Europe against undermining democratic legitimacy through restrictive speech policies, urging a collective return to trust-building governance.
